**Takeaway** There will only ever be just short of 21 million bitcoin. Currently there are already 19.1 million bitcoin in circulation. New bitcoins come into circulation at a predefined and transparent rate by rewarding miners who generate valid proof-of-works. That block reward is halved every 4 years or so. After the year 2141, no new bitcoins will be issued and miners will be rewarded solely with transaction fees.
